Kuyasa Primary School closed in Khayelitsha due to sewage leak

Parents at Kuyasa Primary School in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, have kept the school closed since Friday due to a severe sewage leak. A green sewage spill near the Grade R classrooms has created an overpowering stench and raised significant health concerns for students and staff.

The Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF) has accused the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) of failing to attend a scheduled meeting to resolve the crisis. KDF chairperson Mawande Jara stated that the issue has been a recurring problem since 2017 and expressed concern that students are losing valuable curriculum time.

While a previous leak had been addressed by the City of Cape Town, the WCED identified this as a new issue. The department has arranged emergency cleaning and sanitization measures, with the school expected to resume normal operations on Wednesday once clean-up is complete. An investigation into the cause of the latest spill will follow.
