Kwame Nkrumah: Legacy and the state of his Accra memorial

Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana and a central figure in the Pan-African movement, remains a foundational symbol of African independence. His presidency focused on economic development, including the construction of schools, hospitals, and roads, as well as the establishment of national infrastructure like an airline and shipping line. He was also instrumental in the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).

Despite his legacy, Nkrumah’s rule faced criticism for authoritarianism and the suppression of dissent, leading to his removal in a 1966 military coup while visiting China.

In contemporary Ghana, the physical upkeep of his memory has become a point of discussion. At the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, the fountain at the interchange dedicated to him has fallen into disrepair. Since its inauguration in 2016, the facility has seen broken tiles, non-functional lighting, and a lack of water, leading some to question the current state of maintenance for monuments honoring the nation's founder.
