Kwantene Traditional Council bans Akpeteshie sales

The Kwantene Traditional Council in the Ahafo Region has prohibited the sale and commercial distribution of Akpeteshie, a locally produced gin, within the Kwantene community. The decision, announced by Chief Nana Baffour Awuah Diasempa in a letter dated August 12, 2026, aims to address rising public disturbances, alcohol-related disputes, and an increase in police reports.

The Council also cited the alleged desecration of sacred communal water bodies linked to the unchecked consumption of the spirit. In addition to the sales ban, residents have been cautioned against excessive public drinking and disruptive behavior. The directive specifically targets Akpeteshie and does not extend to other alcoholic beverages or commercial activities.

To ensure enforcement, the Council is seeking formal backing from the Goaso Municipal Assembly. This request has been routed through the Municipal Police Commander to the Municipal Chief Executive, with the goal of providing the Ghana Police Service with the necessary authority to monitor compliance and maintain order.
