Kwara analyst calls for conversion of KWASUED to medical university
Public affairs analyst Ishowo Olanrewaju has urged the Kwara State Government to convert the recently established Kwara State University of Education (KWASUED) into a specialized medical university.
Olanrewaju argued that the state faces a chronic shortage of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, which has left existing medical personnel overstretched. He noted that the current shortage makes industrial actions by medical doctors in state-owned hospitals particularly disruptive to patient care.
To address this, he suggested that the state should prioritize medical education over general education, noting that Kwara already has several institutions—including the University of Ilorin, Kwara State University, and Al-Hikmah University—that produce education graduates. He cited medical universities in Bayelsa, Enugu, and Ondo states as successful models for addressing regional healthcare workforce needs.
