Kwara State fire destroys buildings and businesses in Ilorin

A fallen 33kV electricity transmission line triggered a massive fire in the Oloje Phase 2 area of Ilorin, Kwara State, during the early hours of Tuesday. The incident, which occurred on Lawyer Lambo Street, was caused by the collapse of a concrete pole supporting the power line, which landed on a vehicle and ignited its tyre.

The fire destroyed a vulcanising workshop and several buildings, including two four-bedroom flats and a self-contained apartment. A family, including a newborn baby, was rescued from the self-contained apartment by community members.

Property damage included one completely burnt vehicle, while firefighters managed to save two others. Other losses reported by the Kwara State Fire Service include damaged solar power systems, electrical appliances, and batteries in both a residential flat and an adjoining travel and tours office. The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) was contacted to shut down the electricity feeder to ensure the safety of emergency responders.
