Kwara State judiciary addresses AI risks and case backlogs

At the opening of the 2026/2027 legal year in Kwara State, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and Chief Judge Abiodun Adebara addressed critical challenges facing the judiciary, including case backlogs and the risks of artificial intelligence.

Governor AbdulRazaq, represented by Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi, warned that AI poses a growing threat to the legal system by generating “hallucinations” and fabricated information, such as fictitious cases, quotations, and statutory provisions that appear authoritative but are incorrect. While acknowledging AI's potential for productivity, he emphasized the need to manage its risks regarding misinformation and bias.

To support the judiciary, the state government has pledged improved welfare and infrastructure. This includes the approval of outstanding allowances for magistrates and Area Court judges, car grants for the lower bench, and the construction of a five-storey court complex in Ilorin. Chief Judge Adebara noted the necessity of appointing more judges to address the increasing backlog of cases.
