KwaZulu-Natal police investigate Discipline Bootcamp SA for multiple crimes

Police in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating five criminal cases linked to Discipline Bootcamp SA, also known as Madlokovu Bootcamp, in Richmond. The investigations follow the deaths of two young men at the facility within a six-month period: 23-year-old Mduduzi Luthuli, who died in January following an alleged escape attempt and physical punishment, and 25-year-old Unathi Mkhasibe, who died in July.

In addition to the fatalities, authorities are investigating allegations of assault, as well as a case of rape and defamation filed by a survivor who escaped the compound. Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda stated that law enforcement must inspect the core operations of the camp due to the volume of violent and fatal charges.

The provincial government's Department of Social Development is also auditing the facility to determine if it holds proper legal registration and complies with legislative standards for rehabilitation and youth development.
