Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter shared water area to double in size
The Marine Department plans to optimize the Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter by doubling the size of its ‘shared water area’ from 100 by 1,000 meters to 200 by 1,000 meters. This expansion is intended to meet international standards for hosting major water sports events, such as the World Dragon Boat Championships scheduled for next year.
As part of the reorganization, vessel berths will be relocated from the center of the shelter to five areas closer to the Kai Tak side, including a designated private mooring area. This restructuring aims to improve management and address reported issues regarding unauthorized fee collection by criminal elements in current mooring areas.
Industry stakeholders have expressed concerns regarding potential conflicts between vessel movements and water sports participants. The President of the Hong Kong Yachting Association noted that users of the Kai Tak Water Sports Centre might need to cross through berthing zones to reach the shared water area. In response, the Marine Department stated it has listened to stakeholder feedback and will make adjustments before conducting regional consultations, with the goal of implementing the new arrangements by the end of this year.
