Maharashtra FDA conducts major food safety crackdown across state

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched a major statewide crackdown on food safety violations under its ‘Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra’ campaign. Between September 23 and 27, authorities seized over 50 tonnes of food products, including sweets, milk, and oils, valued at approximately Rs 1.2 crore. The campaign has resulted in the suspension of 30 food establishment licenses across various districts, including Mumbai, Pune, and Konkan.

In Mumbai, the historic Kyani & Co. had its FSSAI license suspended following an inspection that uncovered rat droppings, dead cockroaches, and blood in refrigerators. Other establishments in the city faced similar actions due to pest infestations and improper storage. In Buldhana, the FDA seized roughly 248,845 kg of refined soybean oil worth Rs 3.51 crore from a facility operating without a valid license.

Additionally, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) suspended the license of Seven Seas Hospitality Private Limited after inspections revealed severe hygiene lapses, such as fungal growth on produce and inadequate segregation of food types.

In a separate regulatory move, FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe issued new compliance orders for infant food products. The order mandates prominent warnings that ‘Mother’s Milk is Best for Your Baby’ and prohibits the use of influencers, free samples, or gifts to promote formula milk and complementary baby foods.
