Kyegegwa Government Prison attacked by gunmen in Uganda
Unknown assailants attacked the Kyegegwa Government Prison in western Uganda at approximately 1:00 am on Friday, August 14, 2026. During the attempt to break into the facility, the attackers confronted sentries on the night shift, injuring three Uganda Prisons Service officers.
The injured personnel, identified as Sergeant Warder Kalisa Titus, Sergeant Wardress Nakuya Suzan Margret, and Warder Odongo Joshua, were transported to Kyegegwa General Hospital for medical treatment. The assailants successfully disarmed the officers, fleeing with two firearms. Each weapon was loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, totaling 60 rounds.
According to Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja, no prisoners escaped from the facility during the incident. Security agencies have launched a joint investigation to identify the attackers, determine their motives, and recover the stolen weapons. Authorities have requested that anyone with information regarding the suspects or the firearms contact the police.
