Ukraine deploys AI turrets and Chaharnyk system to counter Russian drones

Ukraine is deploying advanced technological countermeasures to combat evolving Russian drone tactics. To address the rise of fiber-optic controlled drones—which are immune to traditional electronic jamming—the Logika Design Bureau has developed the Chaharnyk system. This device uses acoustic sensors to detect approaching drones and a motorized mechanism with sharp hooks to physically sever the fiber-optic cables.

In addition to physical countermeasures, Ukraine is integrating artificial intelligence into its air defense. Automated machine-gun turrets equipped with AI-driven machine vision have successfully intercepted Russia’s new, high-speed jet-powered Geran-5 drones. While these turrets have a limited range of approximately 0.6 miles, they provide an essential layer of defense for strategic locations like bridges in Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that over 12 such turrets are currently active in the capital, with more planned for the surrounding region.

These developments come as Ukrainian officials warn of a potentially severe winter. Increased Russian production of ballistic missiles and the deployment of faster jet-powered UAVs are placing significant pressure on Ukrainian infrastructure and air defense capabilities.
