Kyiv faces smoke-induced fog and winter anxiety amid Russian attacks

Residents of Kyiv have experienced a dense fog that significantly reduced visibility, an unusual phenomenon that Ukrainian authorities attribute to recent Russian attacks. The State Emergency Service explained that residual smoke and soot from strikes rose into the upper atmosphere and are currently being pushed back toward the ground by an anticyclone. Due to a lack of wind, the air is not circulating, causing the smog to linger.

Air quality monitors in certain areas, such as the Lukianivka district, recorded unhealthy levels of particulate matter. Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors, close windows, and use air purifiers where available, while instructing drivers to use fog lights.

Beyond immediate environmental concerns, the population is facing increasing anxiety regarding the approaching winter. Following previous years where temperatures dropped significantly and infrastructure was damaged, residents are preparing for potential shortages of heating, water, and internet services caused by ongoing military actions.
