Kyiv metro suspended following nationwide power grid disruptions
The Kyiv metro system experienced a complete shutdown for several hours on January 31 after a sharp voltage drop and emergency power outages struck Ukraine’s energy network. The disruption affected all three metro lines, suspending train services and escalator operations.
City authorities reported that lighting failed at some stations, necessitating the partial evacuation of passengers from tunnels. While the metro has frequently operated on reduced schedules during the ongoing war, a full system shutdown is considered a rare occurrence. Underground stations remained operational as air-raid shelters using backup power.
The energy crisis triggered a chain reaction across multiple Ukrainian regions and impacted neighboring Moldova, forcing grid operators to implement emergency measures to stabilize the national system.
