Kyiv residents seek shelter in metro stations amid Russian attacks

Continuous Russian aerial attacks on Kyiv have forced residents to use the city's metro system as primary bomb shelters. Due to a shortage of adequate civilian shelters for the city's four million inhabitants, subway stations transform into makeshift dormitories every night around 10:00 PM, with people using mattresses and tents to secure space in the cold underground environments.

In neighborhoods like Lukjaniwka, which have faced systematic attacks for nearly five years, many residents rely on windowless corridors in their apartments as a secondary refuge. The humanitarian situation is underscored by recent incidents, such as a drone strike on September 25 in the Pechersk district that killed 14-year-old Daniel Umansky while he was doing homework.

The current living conditions in the Ukrainian capital have drawn comparisons to the London Blitz of World War II, as citizens navigate constant sirens and the daily uncertainty of whether their homes and loved ones remain safe.
