Kyiv suburb clashes erupt over alleged military detention site
Clashes broke out in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka, a suburb of Kyiv, following reports that a private house was being used as a temporary holding facility for soldiers. Local residents and relatives gathered to protest, alleging that servicemen who had left their units without authorization were being held and subjected to torture.
National Guard commander Oleksandr Pivnenko stated the location served as a temporary holding point for absent-without-leave soldiers, noting that four individuals required medical treatment. Kyrylo Budanov, head of the President's Office, attended the scene to urge the crowd to disperse and was reportedly hit with pepper spray during the confrontation.
While police denied allegations of illegal detention or deaths, an internal inquiry and an ombudsman review are underway. The incident has highlighted social tensions regarding mobilization and the treatment of deserters within Ukraine.
