Kyjov Hospital detects eight lung cancer cases via screening
Specialists at Kyjov Hospital have identified eight cases of lung cancer through a national early detection program. Over the past five years, the hospital has screened more than 400 high-risk patients as part of a nationwide initiative aimed at catching the disease in its earliest, most treatable stages.
The screening program targets individuals aged 55 to 74 who meet specific criteria, such as a history of smoking at least one pack of cigarettes per day for 20 years. Dr. Petr Kolman, head of the pulmonary department, emphasized that the primary advantage of preventive screening is timing, noting that CT scans can detect changes before a patient even experiences symptoms.
In the Czech Republic, lung cancer is diagnosed in approximately 6,500 people annually, resulting in about 5,300 deaths. The early detection program is guaranteed by the Ministry of Health and implemented in cooperation with the National Screening Center of ÚZIS ČR.
