After finishing sixth in the Richmond race, Larson traveled over 1,100 miles to Knoxville, Iowa, to participate in the prestigious dirt track event.

His attempt was made possible by a weather delay at Knoxville Raceway that postponed the start of the sprint car action. Larson’s flight became a global sensation, noted as the most-tracked flight in the world during the period, with over 7,000 people monitoring its progress. Upon landing in Pella, Iowa, Larson received a police escort to reach the track in time.

Larson, driving for Hendrick Motorsports, secured his fourth career Knoxville Nationals victory. Following the win, Larson addressed critics who had questioned his decision to enter the event given his NASCAR obligations, expressing satisfaction with the outcome.
