Kyle Larson wins NASCAR Cup Series race at Gateway

Kyle Larson secured his first NASCAR Cup Series victory of the 2026 season at the World Wide Technology Raceway, ending a 51-race winless streak. Driving the No. 5 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, Larson won the Enjoy Illinois 300 following two overtime attempts in a race marked by 18 cautions and 87 laps run under caution.

Larson finished 0.333 seconds ahead of teammate Alex Bowman to claim his 33rd career Cup Series victory. The race was characterized by significant mechanical issues and accidents, including brake failures that removed Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney from contention. Larson led 80 laps and won the second stage of the event.

The victory significantly impacts the Chase championship standings. Larson moves into second place in the standings, trailing leader Denny Hamlin by only nine points. He sits ahead of Christopher Bell and Ryan Blaney as the playoffs continue.
