Kyle MacLachlan reflects on creative partnership with David Lynch
Actor Kyle MacLachlan is reflecting on his long-standing creative partnership with director David Lynch ahead of the release of his memoir, ‘Fictional Selves’. MacLachlan describes his role in Lynch’s surreal cinematic worlds as a ‘submersible’—an audience guide tasked with exploring dark, unsettling places while remaining tethered to the director’s vision.
The collaboration began with the 1984 film ‘Dune’ and continued through iconic works such as ‘Blue Velvet’ and the ‘Twin Peaks’ series. MacLachlan expressed that Lynch’s death in January 2025 from emphysema was a ‘tremendous loss’, noting that the director was a singular influence who changed the trajectory of his career.
In his upcoming memoir, MacLachlan explores his unconventional path in Hollywood and the intimate, private nature of his friendship with Lynch, noting that the director was a mentor who provided a sense of joy and creative freedom without judgment.
