Kyle Shanahan Car Crash Sparks 49ers Controversy
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a July head‑on collision in Palo Alto after briefly looking away from the road to locate his phone. The crash left Shanahan with a broken nose, fractured ribs, a broken hand, a severe concussion and more than 40 stitches, while the 21‑year‑old female driver escaped serious injury.
Palo Alto police announced that neither the crash report nor body‑camera footage will be released to the public and no traffic citation was issued, despite the incident involving a violation of California’s hands‑free cellphone law. The decision has drawn criticism and questions about the 11‑day delay before the accident became known.
Amid the fallout, 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk posted Instagram Stories with messages such as “You can’t win the race if you crash out” and “Keep yo head up and stay in yo own lane.” Although he did not name Shanahan, many interpreted the timing as a jab at the coach, adding to reports that Aiyuk’s relationship with the team is strained and that he has been placed on the reserve/left squad list after missing required knee‑rehab sessions.
