Kylian Mbappé apologizes to China following controversial remarks

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has issued a public apology to the Chinese people and communities worldwide following controversial comments made during an interview on the program ‘The Bridge’. During the interview, Mbappé referred to a viral meme featuring his face superimposed on a historical figure as a ‘Chinese dictator’. While he did not explicitly name Mao Zedong, the imagery caused significant offense in China.

The controversy has led to immediate commercial and media repercussions. Three major Chinese companies—Dongpeng Beverage, Mengniu Dairy, and Milkground—terminated their sponsorship deals with the player, citing a zero-tolerance policy for behavior that offends Chinese national sentiments. Additionally, the Chinese state broadcaster, CCTV, suspended broadcasts of La Liga matches and removed promotional content featuring Mbappé.

In response to the backlash, Real Madrid and La Liga president Javier Tebas also issued apologies to the Chinese public. While Real Madrid attempted to frame the remarks as personal opinions, the China Media Group (CMG) rejected these explanations, stating that the club remains responsible for its player and that the comments exceeded the boundaries of freedom of expression. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that actions wounding national sentiments would face collective rejection.
