Kyoto Fusioneering secures 25.72 billion yen for fusion energy development

Kyoto Fusioneering has secured 25.72 billion yen (including credit and loan facilities) in its Series D funding round to accelerate the commercialization of fusion energy. The funding, which includes investment from Minerva Growth Partners, will support the company's integrated demonstration projects known as the ‘UNITY™ Program’ across Japan, Canada, and the United States.

The company focuses on essential infrastructure technologies required for fusion power, regardless of the specific reactor type. Key areas of development include plasma heating systems (gyrotrons), tritium fuel cycles, and tritium breeding blankets.

Under the UNITY program, the company is advancing several key initiatives: ‘UNITY-1’ in Kyoto, Japan, is nearing completion of its power generation integrated test plant; ‘UNITY-2’ in Choke River, Canada, aims to demonstrate a fully integrated tritium fuel cycle; and ‘UNITY-3’ in Tennessee, USA, is being developed in collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy to test tritium breeding blankets.

Kyoto Fusioneering plans to use the capital to expand R&D and manufacturing capabilities, particularly for gyrotrons, and to strengthen its global business foundation as it aims for annual sales of 10 billion yen.
