Kyoto hosts two traditional maiko events in August 2026
On August 14, 2026, Hotel Intergate Kyoto in the Shijo‑Shinmachi area will hold “Maiko‑han to Wa Rōsoku no Akari,” a one‑hour program where authentic maiko perform a traditional dance under the warm glow of Japanese wax candles. Attendees can watch the performance, participate in a short “ozashiki” (parlor) game, and take commemorative photos with the maiko. Tickets cost ¥4,000 for hotel guests and ¥4,500 for non‑guests.
Earlier in the month, on August 1, 2026, the geisha district of Kyoto will stage the “Hassaku” ceremony, a traditional celebration in which geiko and maiko in formal black‑trimmed attire express gratitude to their teachers and tea houses. The event takes place in the city’s hanamachi and features the participants in full formal dress, distinct from the casual “ozashiki” attire used in other performances.
