Kyoto Imperial Palace to hold final public viewing before renovations

Kyoto will host several significant cultural events in autumn 2026. The Kyoto Imperial Palace will hold a special public viewing from October 8 to October 12. This event marks the final opportunity to view the palace grounds and buildings, such as the Shishinden, before a nine-year large-scale renovation project begins, which will involve roof replacements and seismic upgrades.

The viewing will feature traditional performances including Gagaku, Kangen, and Kemari, alongside exhibitions of sliding door paintings and imperial furnishings. Guided tours in Japanese and English will be available.

Additionally, the ‘Machikado Museum’ event will run from October 24 to November 23, involving approximately 40 facilities near the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Kyoto Prefectural Government. This initiative includes special openings of historical buildings and gardens, art exhibitions, and a digital stamp rally. Other local events include the Arashiyama Tsukiakari light-up and the Kyoto Bread Festival at Kamigamo Shrine.
