Kyoto Man Arrested for Seven-Year Loud Guitar Noise Impairing Neighbors' Health

A 61‑year‑old unemployed man in Kyoto's Nishikyo ward was arrested on suspicion of inflicting injury by playing electric guitars and a radio at volumes exceeding 80 dB for about seven years. Neighbours reported that the incessant high‑volume music caused insomnia, depression, tinnitus and other health problems in at least four residents.

Police records show that complaints began in 2019, leading to repeated warnings, but the noise continued. During the arrest, officers seized more than 40 electric guitars and related equipment from the suspect’s apartment. The man denied the accusations, while one victim told reporters, “After the arrest I felt relief – a world without sound.”
