Kyoto’s 2026 festivals and coastal heritage draw visitors to historic city and Maizuru

Kyoto will host three major historic festivals in the second half of 2026. After the Aoi Matsuri in May, the city’s Gion Matsuri runs throughout July with month‑long ceremonies and the famous Yamaboko Junko processions on July 17 and 24. In August, Kyoto Gozan Okuribi lights five mountain bonfires on August 16, and the Jidai Matsuri historic parade takes place on October 22, featuring about 2,000 participants in costumes that span more than a millennium.

Beyond the urban core, Kyoto Prefecture’s coastal town of Maizuru offers a different tourism experience. The waterfront town, known as “Coastal Kyoto,” is home to the historic Maizuru Red Brick Park, former Meiji‑era military warehouses now designated as Important Cultural Properties. Its canals and historic Yoshiwara districts, dubbed the “Venice of the East,” retain Edo‑period charm, while communal baths Hinode‑yu and Waka‑no‑yu showcase early‑20th‑century public‑spa architecture. Together, the festivals and the coastal heritage sites aim to attract both domestic and international travellers seeking authentic cultural experiences.
