The Takashimaya Rokusei department store in Kyoto's new‑town district (Nishi‑Kyōku, Kyoto) will cease operations on 3 August, ending a 44‑year presence that had become a local commercial hub.

In the same period, the 109‑year‑old Kyoto pickles maker Marukita Nakashōtō (丸喜田中商店) was ordered by the Kyoto District Court to begin bankruptcy proceedings, a move attributed to rising vegetable prices and other financial pressures. A large Chinese restaurant operating in the Kyoto Tower building also faced bankruptcy, cited as a result of costly customer‑service expenses.

Both closures illustrate the challenges faced by long‑standing retail and food‑service businesses in the region as market conditions evolve.
