Kypseli Metro construction: Deputy Minister pledges full repair coverage

Nikos Tachiaos, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, has provided assurances to the Greek Parliament regarding building damage caused by the excavation of the Athens Metro Line 4 tunnel in the Kypseli district. The Deputy Minister stated that no resident will bear the cost of repairs, as the project contractor is contractually obligated to cover all restoration expenses.

Work involving the tunnel boring machine (TBM) has been paused. Tachiaos emphasized that operations will not resume until residents are fully informed and safety measures are guaranteed for both current and future buildings along the route. To ensure an objective assessment, Elliniko Metro is entering into a programmatic contract with the Technical Chamber of Greece to conduct independent expert inspections.

Regarding structural safety, Tachiaos clarified that current inspections show no risk of structural failure or need for evacuations. The identified issues are described as remediable damages resulting from differential settlements. He further dismissed claims of high-level danger, explaining that technical classifications used in studies do not equate to seismic-level risks.
