Kypseli residents protest Metro Line 4 construction damage
Residents of the Kypseli neighborhood in Athens held a mass protest and march on Saturday, October 3, to demand safety and transparency following structural damage to buildings caused by the construction of Metro Line 4. The Kypseli Residents' Initiative reported that the underground tunnel work has caused cracks, ground subsidence, and water issues, affecting approximately 35 buildings and hundreds of residents. Some structures have reportedly received “yellow” or “red” safety markings.
Protesters are demanding full access to technical studies and static measurements, the suspension of tunnel work until repairs are completed, and full compensation for owners and tenants. Athens Mayor Harris Doukas attended the protest, noting that at least 14 apartment buildings have confirmed serious problems. Political figures from various parties, including representatives from SYRIZA, also participated, criticizing the government for a lack of transparency.
In response, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Nikos Tachiaos stated that there is no immediate danger to residents, citing assurances from engineers. He emphasized that the contractor is responsible for repairs and denied claims that the state would bear the costs. However, legal representatives for the residents noted that the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) has identified serious structural issues in 14 buildings and has suggested that some may need to be evacuated to allow for repair and support works.
