Kyriakos Mitsotakis calls for better minority rights in Albania
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has stated that while Athens supports the European perspective for the Western Balkans, progress regarding the rights of the Greek minority in Albania is insufficient. Speaking at the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair, Mitsotakis addressed relations with Tirana, specifically noting concerns over property registration and minority protections.
He emphasized that Greece will exercise its rights at the appropriate time to ensure full protection of minority rights, noting that the issue is tied to the respect of European law. He added that the opening and closing of negotiation chapters requires approval from EU member states.
Regarding North Macedonia, Mitsotakis was more critical, stating there has been no fundamental progress in its European negotiations, placing it in an earlier phase compared to Albania.
