Kyriakos Mitsotakis inspects new PPC cogeneration unit in Ptolemaida

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Western Macedonia to inspect the construction of a new high-efficiency cogeneration (Combined Heat and Power) unit by PPC (Public Power Corporation) at the former Kardia lignite power plant site in Ptolemaida.

The unit, representing an 80 million euro investment fully funded by PPC, is designed to provide stable and cost-effective district heating for the Kozani, Eordaia, and Amyntaio regions. It is expected to become operational in stages by the end of 2026. During the visit, the Prime Minister was briefed on additional investments at the site, including a 350 MW pumped-storage unit, 50 MW of battery storage, and modern capacitors to ensure grid stability.

Mitsotakis emphasized that PPC remains committed to the region, countering claims that the utility is abandoning Western Macedonia. The visit also included stops at various industrial and agri-food businesses, highlighting the integration of energy infrastructure with local production and the region's transition from lignite-based energy to more efficient production models.
