Kyriakos Mitsotakis meets Archbishop Makarios in Athens
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Archbishop Makarios of Australia at the Maximos Mansion in Athens to discuss the charitable and social initiatives of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. The discussions emphasized the role of the Church in strengthening ties between Greece and the global Greek diaspora.
During the meeting, Mitsotakis announced a significant change for Greek citizens living abroad: for the first time, voters will be able to cast their ballots via postal mail from their place of residence in upcoming parliamentary elections. This measure aims to facilitate greater electoral participation among the diaspora.
Separately, Archbishop Makarios visited Constantinople to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew’s election. During the visit, the Archbishop reaffirmed the spiritual and canonical ties between the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia and the Ecumenical Patriarchate, describing the Patriarchate as central to the identity of Orthodox Christians in Australia.
