Romanian SuperLiga rolls out new 2026‑27 rule changes to speed up play and expand VAR

The 2026‑27 season of Romania's top football division, SuperLiga, will debut a series of rule changes aimed at accelerating match tempo and improving disciplinary consistency. Substituted players must leave the field within ten seconds; failure delays the incoming player’s entry until the first interruption after a minute of continuous play. Players receiving on‑field medical treatment are required to stay off the pitch for one minute after play resumes. A five‑second countdown will be displayed for throw‑ins, with possession awarded to the opposition if the limit is exceeded. Yellow cards will no longer be issued for stopping a clear goal‑scoring opportunity when the advantage rule is applied and a goal follows. New conduct rules impose a direct dismissal for players who cover their mouths during heated exchanges. VAR authority is broadened to review incorrectly issued red cards, mistaken second yellows, wrongful player sanctions and erroneous corner‑kick decisions.

Head of the Central Referees Committee, Kyros Vassaras, held meetings with club officials and media to explain the reforms and ensure transparent implementation. The Romanian Football Federation also released a free "Guide to SuperLiga" with season fixtures, team rosters and transfer information.
