Minami Kyushu Expressway partially reopens after Kumamoto Earthquake
Three weeks after the Kumamoto Earthquake, partial road access has been restored on the Minami Kyushu Expressway. On August 18, the section between Yatsushiro-minami IC and Tanoura IC reopened to traffic following rapid repairs to damaged bridge joints.
However, the stretch between Yatsushiro Junction and Yatsushiro-minami IC remains closed with no current timeline for restoration. The earthquake has resulted in 39 fatalities and damage to over 32,000 buildings.
Beyond infrastructure, recovery efforts face challenges regarding water security. In Yatsushiro, where many residents rely on private wells, many are facing water shortages due to damaged or turbid wells. Prime Minister Takaichi has met with Kumamoto Governor Kimura to discuss potential financial support for repairing individual wells and conducting necessary investigations.
