Kyushu Shinkansen to resume Kumamoto-Shin-Minamata service on September 18

JR Kyushu has announced that service on the Kyushu Shinkansen between Kumamoto and Shin-Minamata is scheduled to resume on September 18, 2026. This marks the reconnection of the full line between Hakata and Kagoshima Chuo, 52 days after the M7.1 earthquake that struck the Kumamoto region on July 28, 2026.

The restoration follows significant damage to approximately 1,000 pieces of equipment, including severe structural issues at the Minamikawagashi Bridge near Shin-Yatsushiro. To expedite the reopening of the main artery, JR Kyushu is employing a two-stage approach: implementing temporary repairs and speed restrictions rather than waiting for full permanent reconstruction.

While the main line will reconnect, trains will operate at reduced speeds near Shin-Yatsushiro, causing minor delays. Most services between Hakata and Kumamoto will return to pre-earthquake schedules, and approximately 90% of direct services to the Sanyo Shinkansen will be maintained. Other local lines, such as the Kagoshima Main Line between Uto and Yatsushiro, are expected to resume service around mid-October.
