Kyushu University study links tatami mats to improved focus
A study conducted by Kyushu University and published in the journal Scientific Reports suggests that sitting on traditional Japanese tatami mats made from Igusa can enhance concentration and reduce anxiety.
Researchers led by Associate Professor Kuniyoshi Shimizu used electroencephalography (EEG) to monitor 17 volunteers while they performed tasks in a soundproof room. The study compared the effects of Igusa mats against unscented polypropylene mats. The results indicated that participants using Igusa mats showed increased beta wave activity in specific brain regions, which is associated with higher focus and cognitive engagement. Additionally, gamma wave changes were observed between rest and task periods, while alpha wave activity remained more stable during rest.
Psychological questionnaires administered after the tasks indicated that the use of tatami mats helped reduce tension and stress levels among participants. Researchers believe the scent and texture of the Igusa plant may play a role in these observed neurological and psychological benefits.
