L. Krishnan, Malay film pioneer, dies at 104

Tan Sri L. Krishnan, a pioneering figure in the Malay film industry, has passed away in Chiang Mai, Thailand, at the age of 104. His death was confirmed by the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) following reports that he died due to old age.

Krishnan was instrumental in the early development of modern Malay cinema, particularly during his tenure as a director at Shaw Brothers' Jalan Ampas studio in Singapore. He is widely credited with discovering and nurturing the talent of legendary icon Tan Sri P. Ramlee, casting him in leading roles such as in the 1950 film ‘Bakti’.

Throughout his prolific career, Krishnan directed more than 30 films, spanning various genres including drama and horror, such as ‘Orang Minyak’. He was a recipient of the 2016 Merdeka Award for his outstanding contributions to the industry. Born in Madras, India, and raised in Penang, his career spanned several decades and multiple countries, leaving a lasting impact on generations of Southeast Asian actors and filmmakers.
