L214 files complaint over duck farming conditions in Sèvremoine

The animal rights association L214 has filed a formal complaint with the Angers public prosecutor regarding the living conditions of 11,500 Muscovy ducks at a farm in Sèvremoine, Maine-et-Loire. Based on footage filmed in July and August 2026, the association alleges that the birds are kept in a single enclosed building on plastic slats without litter or access to water for bathing.

According to the investigation, each duck is allocated approximately 700 cm² of space, which L214 notes is significantly less than the 1,000 cm² required for rest or the 4,061 cm² recommended by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for movement. The report describes animals with soiled plumage, leg lesions, and mobility issues, as well as the presence of carcasses among the living birds.

The complaint targets the farm, the Terrena group, and the retailer Carrefour, as the meat is sold under the ‘Carrefour Extra’ brand. Activists are calling for the retailer to remove these products from shelves and commit to the Plant Protein Pact.
