L3Harris proposes KC-135 modernization to extend service beyond 2050

L3Harris has proposed an avionics modernization package designed to keep the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker in service for the US Air Force beyond 2050. The proposal, disclosed on September 15, aims to replace obsolete cockpit instruments with digital equipment and implement an open architecture to facilitate future upgrades.

The modernization strategy utilizes commercially available components and industry-standard interfaces. According to L3Harris, this approach could reduce reliance on specific suppliers and mitigate the increasing difficulty of sourcing replacement parts for current avionics. The package is intended to reduce maintenance risks and aircrew workload without requiring major cockpit redesigns.

The longevity of the KC-135 fleet is tied to the transition pace toward the KC-46A replacement. Because some aircraft manufactured between 1956 and 1965 could approach a century of age if kept operational, this proposal serves as a potential solution for sustaining the fleet during a prolonged transition period. While the US Air Force has previously completed Block 45 cockpit modernizations, this new proposal has not yet been awarded as a contract.
