La Asunta community seizes mining camp over pollution claims

Community members in La Asunta, La Paz, seized a mining camp near the Boopi River following protests against a Chinese mining company. Demonstrators accused the firm of illegal exploitation, environmental pollution, and diverting the river's flow, which has increased the risk of flooding in the region.

The unrest resulted in violent clashes, leaving several people injured, including one woman who required medical evacuation to La Paz. Protesters also burned a dump truck and heavy machinery. While the Bolivian Police and Public Ministry intervened to restore order, community leaders expressed frustration with the Administrative Mining Jurisdictional Authority (AJAM) for failing to act on previous complaints regarding irregular mining activities.
