Gregorio Marañón Hospital reports promising results in colorectal cancer clinical trial
The Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón in Madrid has participated in a Phase I international clinical trial showing promising results for treating metastatic colorectal cancer. The study, which also included the Cancer Center Clínica Universidad de Navarra (CCUN), involved 66 patients who had not responded to conventional first- or second-line treatments.
The research evaluated a molecule that combines a specific antibody with high-dose chemotherapy. This approach allows for more precise targeting of the tumor and higher therapeutic potency without increasing intolerable side effects. According to results published in the journal Annals of Oncology and presented at the ESMO congress, the treatment increased overall survival from 10 to 14 months.
Following the success of this initial phase, the trial will advance to Phase II/III to confirm efficacy in a larger patient group. Colorectal cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed tumor in Spain, with an estimated 44,000 new cases expected by 2026.
