La Banda establishes official Poncho Bandeño garment
The Honorable Deliberative Council of La Banda has officially approved an ordinance to create the ‘Poncho Bandeño’ as the city’s distinctive garment. The initiative aims to strengthen local cultural identity and community belonging by utilizing symbols and history specific to the region.
Inspired by the traditional poncho of Santiago del Estero, the new garment will feature an earthy brown base and be handcrafted using natural fibers such as wool or cotton on traditional looms. Design elements include 10-centimeter fringes, red geometric side borders linked to Chaco-Santiagueño culture, and three central stripes in federal red, white, and light blue to represent the city’s flag. The front will display the La Banda coat of arms and the inscription ‘Santiago del Estero-Argentina’ in red.
The poncho, measuring 180 centimeters in length and 1.20 meters in width, is intended for use in protocol acts, cultural events, and official representations. It may also serve as an institutional gift. The municipal executive will promote training and support for local artisans to prioritize local production and preserve traditional weaving techniques.
