Latin American regions launch mental health and drug prevention initiatives
Various regions across Latin America are implementing diverse public health initiatives focused on mental health, suicide prevention, and substance abuse.
In Argentina, municipalities in La Banda, Concepción del Uruguay, Río Gallegos, and Caleta Olivia have launched programs to address addiction and suicide prevention. These include school-based projects like ‘Construyendo Bienestar en el Ámbito Educativo’ in La Banda, cultural workshops in Concepción del Uruguay, and art-based mental health sessions in Río Gallegos.
In Mexico, the Congress of Mexico City held a forum on public health to discuss addiction prevention for youth, while parents in Morelos have called for intervention in schools regarding bullying and drug use. In Bolivia, the Defensoría del Pueblo has urged coordinated efforts between schools and families to combat micro-trafficking.
International cooperation is also evident in Venezuela, where the National Anti-Drug Superintendency is working with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to strengthen technical capacities against organized crime. Additionally, the United States is providing training to Guatemalan customs to improve the detection of synthetic drugs. In the Dominican Republic, the National Directorate for Drug Control (DNCD) has launched a campaign to educate the public on overdose myths and emergency responses.
