La Beach demolitions spark disputes over land rights and consultation
Disputes have emerged regarding the demolition and clearance of businesses along the La Beach beachfront. Former NPP National Chairman Freddie Blay stated that compensation for the land was paid to the La Traditional Council over 60 years ago. He noted that the Council has indicated approximately 85 people in the area pay rent to the stool, challenging the classification of these businesses as encroachers.
Blay criticized the SSNIT Board of Trustees, suggesting some members had not personally visited the site before making decisions. He warned that the demolitions could damage Ghana’s growing tourism and hospitality sectors.
Senyo Hosi, convener of the OneGhana Movement, condemned the lack of consultation with the Ga people. He argued that the beach is a vital socio-economic and entertainment hub that supports thousands of livelihoods. Hosi expressed concern that the community is losing influence in its traditional space and described the lack of engagement with local chiefs as disrespectful to the Ga people’s historical contributions to national development.
