La Bola Negra breaks Spanish box office records

The Spanish film ‘La Bola Negra’, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi (known as Los Javis), has achieved massive commercial success, grossing approximately 4.7 million euros and attracting over 610,000 spectators during its opening weekend. This performance marks it as the ninth best Spanish film opening in history and the second best of the decade, trailing only ‘Torrente Presidente’.

Inspired by the unfinished work of Federico García Lorca, the queer historical epic follows three men across different eras of Spanish history: 1932, 1937, and 2017. The film features an ensemble cast including Penélope Cruz, Glenn Close, Miguel Bernardeau, and Guitarricadelafuente.

Following its success at the Cannes and Toronto International Film Festivals, where it won the People’s Choice Award, the film is gaining significant momentum as a major contender for the Academy Awards. Netflix has acquired the distribution rights for the US market, and the production company, Suma Content SL, has registered the title for marketing and entertainment services across the European Union.
