La bola negra emerges as major Oscar contender for Netflix
The Spanish film ‘La bola negra’, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, has emerged as a significant contender in the Oscar race. The film recently won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, making it the first Netflix production and the first non-English language film in 15 years to achieve this distinction.
Netflix is positioning the film as a major candidate for Best Picture and Best International Feature. To support its campaign, the streaming platform has scheduled a 47-day exclusive theatrical window in the United States from October 16 to December 2. While the film has seen record-breaking success in Spanish cinemas, industry analysts note potential challenges, including its 160-minute runtime and the competitive nature of subtitled films during the awards season.
In the broader International Feature race, ‘La bola negra’ is cited alongside other early contenders such as ‘Fjord’ from Romania and ‘Woman Unknown’ from Denmark.
