La bola negra film explores Lorca’s legacy and political themes
The film ‘La bola negra’, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi (known as ‘Los Javis’), is set to premiere in autumn 2026. Based on the unfinished work ‘La piedra oscura’ by Federico García Lorca, the film explores themes of identity, sexuality, and repression across different historical periods.
Following a Best Director win at the Cannes Film Festival, the directors have addressed the film’s political dimensions. They describe the work as having an anti-fascist message, noting that discussions regarding sexual and gender identity are inherently political. The production features a cast including Penélope Cruz, Glenn Close, Miguel Bernardeau, and Guitarricadelafuente.
The story centers on the final hours of Rafael Rodríguez Rapún, secretary of La Barraca and Lorca’s partner, in a military hospital in Santander. The film’s release coincides with the 90th anniversary of the poet’s execution.
