La bola negra achieves record box office and Oscar campaign launch

The Spanish film ‘La bola negra’, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi (known as Los Javis), is achieving significant commercial and critical success. In Spain, the film has become the fourth highest-grossing Spanish film in history, earning over 28.6 million euros and surpassing ‘Torrente, presidente’. It is currently the highest-grossing Spanish film of the year.

Internationally, the production is launching an Oscar campaign for the 2027 Academy Awards. The directors and cast recently attended the film's New York premiere at NewFest, accompanied by figures such as Glenn Close and Julio Torres. The film also made appearances at the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles, where the cast socialized with various high-profile celebrities.

Inspired by an unfinished play by Federico García Lorca and the work of Alberto Conejero, the film explores themes of sexuality, desire, and historical upheaval in Spain across three different time periods: 1932, 1937, and 2017. Renowned Lorca expert Ian Gibson praised the film as extraordinary and moving, though he noted personal preferences regarding its conclusion.
