La bola negra to screen at 32nd Festival of Author Films
The acclaimed film ‘La bola negra’ (The Black Sphere), directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrosio, will be screened as part of the main program of the 32nd Festival of Author Films on Saturday, November 21. Produced by Pedro Almodóvar, the film serves as an homage to the Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca.
Based on Lorca’s unfinished drama, the film follows three interconnected stories of young people navigating sexuality and social norms across different historical periods. The film has seen significant commercial and critical success, attracting over two million viewers during its first two weeks in Spanish cinemas and winning the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Following its festival success, Netflix acquired the film for North American distribution for a record-breaking amount. The deal is noted for its potential to mark a turning point in the relationship between theatrical and streaming distribution, as the film is expected to adhere to agreements requiring a minimum 45-day exclusive theatrical window.
