The Spanish queer drama “La Bola Negra,” directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi (known as Los Javis), has won the People’s Choice Award at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film, which follows the interconnected lives of three gay men across different eras of Spanish history, is considered a major contender for the Academy Awards. This victory marks the first time since 2011 that a non-English-language film has won the festival’s top audience prize.

Inspired by the legacy of poet Federico García Lorca, the film features an ensemble cast including Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close. Following its success at the Cannes Film Festival, where the directors shared the Best Director award, Netflix has acquired the rights and is planning an extensive awards campaign and an extended theatrical release.

Other notable winners at the festival included “Elsinore” by Simon Stone, which received the International People’s Choice Award, and “Darlene Love: I Know Where I’ve Been,” which won the People’s Choice Documentary Award. “I Play Rocky” and “Being Heumann” were named the first and second runners-up for the main People’s Choice Award, respectively.
